Ian Dunn and Michael Wellman Join TrueNorth Capital Partners LLC

Stamford, CT, January 2020: TrueNorth Capital Partners LLC is pleased to announce that Ian Dunn and Michael Wellman have joined the firm as Managing Directors. In their new roles Ian and Michael will help provide for the further expansion of TrueNorth’s strong industry presence and capabilities in the Aerospace and Defense sectors, both in the domestic and cross border markets.

Ian and Michael will focus their efforts on origination and execution of acquisitions, divestitures, financings, joint ventures and other strategic business arrangements in the Aerospace and Defense sector. Combined, both bring over 80 years of diversified experience gained in international investment banking and corporate finance. With Ian based in Naples, FL and Michael in London, UK, their addition to the TrueNorth team also expands our geographic footprint.

Ian’s resume includes a career with Citibank in London as a commercial banker, initially serving the European real estate sector and subsequently focusing on corporates in the chemical industry. Transferred to the bank’s head office in New York, he worked as part of a team concentrating on overseas investment by European corporations into the U.S. He then joined Citibank’s Merger and Acquisition Group where inter alia, he initiated and advised on the sale of InterContinental Hotels to Grand Metropolitan plc by Pan American Airways. In 1985, after several successful years with Citibank’s M&A Group, Ian was appointed an Executive Director of the UK based merchant bank, Samuel Montagu & Company, Ltd., serving as President of Samuel Montagu Inc.’s operations in New York.

In 1993, Ian founded Dunn Johnston and Company, Inc. (“DJ& Co.”) in New York, a boutique merger and acquisition advisory firm specializing on the transatlantic deal flow between the UK and the U.S. Approximately 70 transactions were completed during DJ& Co.’s history including the sale of Smith & Wesson by Tomkins plc. In 2008, he decided to focus the practice on the Aerospace and Defense industry. In the process he created a comprehensive client base in the sector, as well as a detailed knowledge of the industry and its participants, both in the U.S. and Europe. DJ& Co. has been involved in a number of transactions in the turbine engine sector, particularly with companies machining components for Rolls Royce and Pratt & Whitney.

Michael started his banking career at Citibank where he held a number of positions between 1973 -1982. During this period, he worked in the bank’s financial control division in New York, and subsequently in London as an Executive Director at Citicorp International Bank Ltd., developing its syndicated loan & project finance activities in Europe and Africa until 1978. He then established and ran Citicorp’s investment banking offices in Tokyo, and Buenos Aires.

Over the next 16 years he also worked in several other major financial institutions including Bank of America, where his remit included overseeing capital market issues for government and corporate borrowers in Europe and the Gulf region. Michael successively worked at Schroders, and Bear Stearns, with responsibilities including Equity Capital Markets, M&A, and Investment Banking operations in London. In 1998 Michael joined the Industrial Bank of Japan, where he expanded and managed several of the firms’ investment banking activities in Europe, particularly in the engineering, aerospace and industrial goods sectors.

Since 2008, Michael has been a UK based Managing Director of DJ& Co., focused entirely on acquisitions within the Aerospace & Defense markets. He has an in-depth knowledge of the civil and military aerospace supply chain, as well as the MRO market both in the U.S. and Europe. Michael speaks fluent French, Italian and Spanish, and some Japanese and German.

Both individuals are instrument rated pilots.

Ian earned a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Physics and Chemistry from the University of Durham (England) and a Master of Science (M.S.) degree from the University of Warwick Business School (England).
